Spotlight: Miss Lina's Ballerinas

By Grace Maccarone
Pictures by Christine Davenier
Eight little girls take dance from Miss Lina: Christina, Edwina, Sabrina, Justina, Katrina, Bettina, Marina, and Nina.  In four lines of two they dance every day.  In four lines of two, they study ballet. (And that is the limit to my rhyming power.)  One sunny morning, Regina joins Miss Lina's ballet class.  The other girls are thrown into confusion when their four lines of two are disrupted by a ninth dancer.  Can Miss Lina help her pupil adapt?

Grace Maccarone's verse is pleasant in the mouth, and I cannot say the same for all rhyming picture books.  It was a fast read, but that did not take any pleasure out of it for me or Big Sister.  We took time to admire the beautiful pictures by Christine Davenier and match each ballerina to her name.  Some of the reviews I read compare Miss Lina's Ballerinas to the Madeline books.  I would agree that if you enjoy Madeline, you will likely enjoy this.

We can't wait to read the new Miss Lina book: Miss Lina's Ballerina's and the Prince.
